With a mobile phone camera in one hand and a bouquet of flowers in the other, Nurith Aviv visits friends in their Parisian flats. Thirteen of them speak, in calm, static shots, about their first names – about origin and belonging, about name changes, memories and wounds. From these focused portraits emerges a polyphonic picture of contemporary France and Europe. Despite some painful stories, GIVEN NAMES never feels heavy, but rather like a gift of flowers: a quiet act of friendship, thoughtful, warm and full of great humanity.
