Unlike the majority of Nurith Aviv’s films, SIGNING does not focus on the spoken word, but rather on hands, arms and facial expressions. By exploring the theme of sign language, it opens up a world to hearing people that usually remains hidden from them. It tells of the everyday lives of deaf people, of ways of living together, and of the uniqueness of these languages. As always, Aviv combines intellectual curiosity with a simple, people-centred cinematic style. In the “silent” opening film HER PORTRAIT, MY PORTRAIT, Aviv observes the painter Liliane Klapisch as she attempts to paint her portrait – a quiet double portrait exploring creativity and friendship.
