Unlike the majority of Nurith Aviv’s films, SIGNING does not focus on the spoken word, but rather on hands, arms and facial expressions. By exploring the theme of sign language, it opens up a world to hearing people that usually remains hidden from them. It tells of the everyday lives of deaf people, of ways of living together, and of the uniqueness of these languages. As always, Aviv combines intellectual curiosity with a simple, people-centred cinematic style. In the “silent” opening film HER PORTRAIT, MY PORTRAIT, Aviv observes the painter Liliane Klapisch as she attempts to paint her portrait – a quiet double portrait exploring creativity and friendship.

LOSS

Berlin, the birthplace of Nurith Aviv’s Jewish father: in LOSS, we see an unedited journey on the Ringbahn, the city gliding past the train window whilst the filmmaker’s friends discuss the void left there by the Shoah. The result, as Aviv puts it, is an “intellectual story” about loss – a quest in which urban landscape, language and memory intertwine. FROM LANGUAGE TO LANGUAGE tells a similarly interwoven story – but from the other side of exile: of people who found a new home in Israel between Hebrew and their mother tongue.
