BE 2023, D: Benjamin Deboosere, A: Oriana Mangala Ikomo Wanga, Bernice Leming, 95‘, OV with english subtitles, DCP
Although significantly shorter than the original book title, the length of shipwrecked Robinson’s stay on the island is still made clear. Plus: the self-centred hubris of a colonialist white thinking that creates categories of domination and oppression with notions like “reason” and “civilization” to subdue the world. However, Benjamin Deboosere’s sparking feature debut is, despite its critical re-perspectivation and re-encoding, first and foremost an extremely entertaining, wonderfully depicted cinematic spectacle. Full of black self-assurance, performative moments and unexpected twists and turns. For instance, temporarily several goats take the helm of the story and ponder their wholly distinct problems on the barren island.

Koffi is a young man from Congo, who is living in Europe with his fiancée Alice. They visit his family, the reception is aloof right up to chilly – Koffi has a birthmark, which is why his mother accused him of being a sorcerer. Intertwined with his story are characters with similar destinies: his sister Tshala or Paco, a street teenager and dealer of antibiotics.
OMEN promenades between the allure of modernity and being anchored in traditions. Equipped with music, sublime costumes, supernatural horror elements, psychological subtlety and black humour, we drift along with the intensity of the film, on and on into an unsettling, phantasmagorical vision of the Congo and Africa.

Dear people –
this coming September, you know what’s going on. We are going on. Mark your calendars form 07th to 17th of September 2023 – it’s going to be GEGENkino time then. Right now, we are working meticulously on the last delicacies of the programme – it’s going to be packed and looks rather nice by all means – so much can already be said.
At our venues UT Connewitz, Luru Kino in der Spinnerei, Schaubühne Lindenfels – this year also at Grassi Museum Leipzig – we will make the screens, your and our eyes and brainy windings glow – this year’s thematic focus deals with animals in film, on top we have a mobile venue for the first time (so wicked), numerous guests, festival gems and more and more and more.
More to come soon – be ready for surprises.
We are looking forward to you!
