Maybe you’ve seen some films by the likes of Pedro Costa or Miguel Gomes already, then it should be no big news for you anymore that contemporary Portuguese cinema is definitely something to keep on radar. Not unlike those two directors, João Pedro Rodrigues’ cinematic language is also quite unique and inventive and his way of storytelling beautifully weird. Reason enough for us to include his most recent work O ORNITÓLOGO (THE ORNITHOLOGIST) in our programme. You can already see the trailer below. The whole film will be screened on 11 April, 8pm at Luru Kino, including important travel safety tipps for your next birdwatching tour through the Portuguese countryside.
O ORNITÓLOGO / THE ORNITHOLOGIST

Fernando ist ein einzelgängerischer Ornithologe, der auf einem abgelegenen Fluss im Norden Portugals nach dem seltenen Schwarzstorch Ausschau hält, bis sein Kanu von der Strömung mitgerissen wird und kentert. Wieder bei Bewusstsein, befindet er sich in einem Wald, gerettet von zwei chinesischen Pilgerinnen auf ihrem Weg nach Santiago de Compostela. Aus Fernandos Weg zurück ins Leben wird eine surreale Reise nach Innen, in der sich die Geschichte zunehmend auflöst, sich Zeit- wie Raumschranken entledigt und einen sexuellen Mythos etabliert. Dabei muss niemand wissen, dass THE ORNITHOLOGIST Rodrigues’ autobiografische Zerlegung und unbekümmert freie, blasphemische Modernisierung des klerikalen Antonius von Padua-Geschichte ist, um den Film zu mögen. Im Gegenteil: die wechselhaften, wunderbar exzentrischen Episoden, die mysteriöse Dichte und doppelbödige Sinnlichkeit der Bilder fesseln von Anfang an. THE ORNITHOLOGIST ist ein losgelöstes Kino, das sich mit seinen Figuren in ständiger Verwandlung befindet, nur sich selbst unterworfen – ein Kino, das die Schwerkraft linearer Narrativität und festgefahrener Vorstellungen hinter sich lässt wie die Vögel die irdische Schwerkraft. Bei vielen anderen würde solch eine assoziative Fabulierlust den Film auseinanderfallen lassen, doch Rodrigues vermischt mit eindrucksvoller Kontrolle Motive, die scheinbar nicht zusammen passen. Er verleiht den Episoden eine eigensinnige Kohärenz, die einen bei der Stange hält – und die auch lässig dem Blick standhält, den die Vögel im Film immer mal wieder von oben herab zurück auf Fernando werfen.

What could be better after a long, hard Day of Labour than watching a film, where all dialogue’s comprised of quotes from US American TV shows and soap operas?! Exactly…!
So, on May 1 we will screen the magnificient queer film gem »Fort Buchanan« at Schaubühne Lindenfels. After this one, there will also be a re-screening of »Desire will Set You Free« at 9:30pm (same place), especially for those who can’t make it to the first screening of »Desire will Set You Free« since it might overlap with our screening at GRASSI Museum the same day.
So, that’s it! That’s the whole programme of the festival!

Fort Buchanan

In Benjamin Crotty’s debut feature, the eponymous »Fort Buchanan« is located in the French countryside and actually, it’s more a queer rural commune than a military base. Although, most of the inhabitants have husbands still in the active service. Like Roger, whose significant other Frank is in Africa and whose mutual daughter Roxy likewise is dreaming of a future in the army. Apropos of nothing, her juvenile sexuality awakens, a fact that the polyamorous fort notices with joy. Father No. 1 is tormented by solitude and fidelity, which is why the community summarily decides to fly to Djibouti to visit father No. 2. But after 18 years of marriage, passion and desire refuse to really arise, even hot pants and a new haircut cannot help that. What a virtuoso film! So full of sensuality: the colours, the bodies, the light, the coarseness of the 16mm material. Along with it, a mixture of country tunes, classical music and electro party sounds. A hybrid full of artificiality, confusing cuts, and dialogues that are all taken from US soap operas and which in French appear as completely bizarre! Down with expectations! A cheer for fine humour! Here’s Queer Cinema at its best!

DESIRE WILL SET YOU FREE – das ist in dieser Nacht zweierlei: Partymotto und Titel des Films von Yony Leyser. Ezra, ein amerikanischer Schriftsteller, kommt nach Berlin. Wegen David Bowie. Dort trifft er auf Sasha, einen russischen Immigranten, der als Escort arbeitet. Beide driften durch die queere Subkultur und den exzessiven Underground der Stadt, ihrer Arbeit nachgehend bzw. auf der Suche danach seiend. Die Stadt Berlin wird mit ihren vielen Tummelplätzen für marginalisierte Kulturen zum Hauptcharakter des Films. Nach Filmscreening und Gespräch mit Regisseur Yony Leyser machen wir Platz unter der Kuppel des großen Trakts im IfZ, um ein After-Show-Programm zu präsentieren, das Euch gefallen wird. Dabei sei ein schlagkräftiger Special Guest hervorgehoben (Überraschung!) und ein Musikprogramm, das Disco-Spielwiesen-Bedürfnisse gleichermaßen bedient wie Eure progressiven elektronischen Bedürfnisse. Abyss X aus L.A. ist als Produzentin, Sängerin, Performerin und bildende Künstlerin inspiriert von animierter Computergrafik-Kunst und futuristischer Clubmusik. Ihre ehrlichen Texte und ihre soulige Stimme vermischen sich nahtlos mit eingängigen und komplexen Neopop-Beats, woraus sie ihren eigenen, antreibenden R’n’B-Stil schafft. Die kräuselnd wellenartigen, tiefen Kompositionen der in Berlin lebende Newcomerin Ziur ähneln den spielerisch-neurotischen Tagträumen eines Club-Serienkillers. Gerade zurück von einer Europatour mit Peaches Ende letzten Jahres, ist sie sicherlich ein Act, auf den man 2016 achten sollte.
