Let’s continue with GEGENkino day three: on April 23 at UT Connewitz we will show the films Twaaga (by Cedric Ido) and Crumbs (by Miguel Llansó) in a double feature as part of our section AFRICAN OUTLINES.
At GEGENkino 2016 we will have a focus on post-colonial topics and on young African cinema. We want to open up a discourse about cinema from African countries, it’s aesthetics, show it’s diversity and try to prove that there’s even more to African cinema than Nollywood and Afrofuturism only.

Twaaga

1987. Burkina Faso im Jahre der Ermordung des antiimperialistischen Präsidenten Thomas Sankara. Die zwei Brüder Albert und Manu schlagen sich jeder auf ihre Art durch. Der ältere Albert ist Teil einer Gang, die beauftragt wird einen libanesischen Händler einzuschüchtern. Manu hingegen ist noch ganz Kind, liebt Comics und lebt mit seinem frisch geschneiderten Superheldenkostüm in einer magischen Welt, in der Emanzipationsbewegungen nur von Interesse sind, wenn sich mit ihnen die Mythologien seiner mächtigen Vorbilder verstehen lassen. So tobt er durch die staubigen Straßen seiner Heimatstadt, bis er begreifen muss, dass ein eigenes Gewand auch ein eigenes Schicksal fordert.
Crumbs

Das Genre: Post-Apokalypse-Science-Fiction. Ein Wort so lang wie die Reise, die der Held auf sich nimmt, um den Weihnachtsmann zu finden. Er durchstreift Landschaften, mal karg und wüst, mal grün und üppig. Bewaffnet ist er mit westlichen Popkulturgütern, die zu sakralen Artefakten aufgeladen werden. Zuhause in der Bowlingbahn folgt seine Freundin einer mysteriösen Stimme aus der Tiefe, während hoch über allem ein extraterrestrisches Flugobjekt thront. Vieles gerät aus den Fugen. Einzig der Altar für Michael Jordan scheint wie immer religiöse Zuflucht zu bieten. Der Spanier Miguel Llansó, der viele Jahre in Äthiopien gelebt hat und dessen Leidenschaft dem experimentellen Punk in Film und Musik gehört, bedient sich wunderbarer Eigentümlichkeiten der Fantasie, der Schönheit des Landes und der starken Präsenz seiner Schauspieler. Daraus schafft er einen surrealistischen Kino-Bastard voller Humor und Selbstironie.

DESIRE WILL SET YOU FREE – das ist in dieser Nacht zweierlei: Partymotto und Titel des Films von Yony Leyser. Ezra, ein amerikanischer Schriftsteller, kommt nach Berlin. Wegen David Bowie. Dort trifft er auf Sasha, einen russischen Immigranten, der als Escort arbeitet. Beide driften durch die queere Subkultur und den exzessiven Underground der Stadt, ihrer Arbeit nachgehend bzw. auf der Suche danach seiend. Die Stadt Berlin wird mit ihren vielen Tummelplätzen für marginalisierte Kulturen zum Hauptcharakter des Films. Nach Filmscreening und Gespräch mit Regisseur Yony Leyser machen wir Platz unter der Kuppel des großen Trakts im IfZ, um ein After-Show-Programm zu präsentieren, das Euch gefallen wird. Dabei sei ein schlagkräftiger Special Guest hervorgehoben (Überraschung!) und ein Musikprogramm, das Disco-Spielwiesen-Bedürfnisse gleichermaßen bedient wie Eure progressiven elektronischen Bedürfnisse. Abyss X aus L.A. ist als Produzentin, Sängerin, Performerin und bildende Künstlerin inspiriert von animierter Computergrafik-Kunst und futuristischer Clubmusik. Ihre ehrlichen Texte und ihre soulige Stimme vermischen sich nahtlos mit eingängigen und komplexen Neopop-Beats, woraus sie ihren eigenen, antreibenden R’n’B-Stil schafft. Die kräuselnd wellenartigen, tiefen Kompositionen der in Berlin lebende Newcomerin Ziur ähneln den spielerisch-neurotischen Tagträumen eines Club-Serienkillers. Gerade zurück von einer Europatour mit Peaches Ende letzten Jahres, ist sie sicherlich ein Act, auf den man 2016 achten sollte.

Hey there, all you lovely GEGENkino friends,
it’s about time to lift the veil, finally, and reveal the programme of this year’s GEGENkino festival. So, let’s start with the opening film:
For the 3rd edition of GEGENkino we are happy to be able to screen the L.A. Sunset Strip trip movie Tangerine by Sean Baker as the opener for the festival. A Christmas film in the sun, completely shot on an iPhone and with hyper-fast dialogues like coming from amphetaminized brains and tongues.

Tangerine

“Out here, it’s all about our hustle. And THAT’S IT”, Alexandra tells her best friend Sin-Dee Rella. Both are struggling along as transsexual sex workers and are deeply connected to their neighbourhood in Los Angeles—the area around the intersection of Santa Monica and Highland, notorious for its drug scene and prostitution milieu. Sin-Dee is just back from prison and at a meeting in the donut shop she’s being told by Alexandra that her pimp and lover Chester cheated on her during her absence—with a white cis woman. Henceforth, “No drama!” becomes the motto of the both. But: humming dub step basslines and Sin-Dee’s furious vendetta tell another story. Filmed entirely on an iPhone the luscious, Californian sun-drenched pictures evolve into a composition of a realist subculture study and uninhibited post-modification. There’s a lot of solitude on the streets of L.A.. Tangerine puts up resistance though, and with an enchanting attitude tells of everyday hopes and dreams, of allies and solidarity.
